The blog post discusses the fact that more and more people in Vancouver are riding than ever before.  More bike lanes, and higher traffic density, along with working from home due to the pandemic, and caused a renaissance in riding.  Bike shops around Vancouver are selling out of bikes!  And the interest in electric, or e-bikes, is on the rise. Although expensive, e-bikes are a great and easy way to get around with their motor assist to pedaling.  Give one a try before you buy at Bees Knees rentals in Vancouver.

Bees Knees is now a proud 529 Garage registration station!

As many of you know, one of our own riders, Eric Mold, recently had his coveted eProdigy Jasper stolen from his underground parking, as reported by CTV. At 92 years old and a daily e-bike rider around Stanley Park, Eric was devastated with the loss of his favorite bike.

Bees Knees jumped in to help Eric get a replacement bike, and we learned a few new skills along the way, thanks to support from the Vancouver Police Department’s bike theft crew, and them introducing us to 529 Garage: Register. Report. Recover!

What is 529 Garage? Well essentially it’s community watch for your bike, and VPD are claiming that since they launched the program, bike thefts are down across Vancouver. Which is amazing, given that bike purchases and the amount of bikes out and about has increased dramatically in the last few years.

What we learned about 529 Garage is it’s a fast and effective way of registering your bike via a phone app to make it less of a desirable target for thieves. The following information is from 529 Garage website

What to wear on your e-bike ride around Vancouver

Prepare for a fun e-bike rental!

We have a lot of people who pop in to Bees Knees e-bike rentals to ride our e-bikes – either on a whim as the sun just came out, or a pre-planned and booked ride around Stanley Park – and who sometimes ride off with excitement, batteries all charged up for a nice long ride, but wearing clothes that just don’t support our ever changing Vancouver weather.

Riders, either new to Vancouver or seasoned locals, sometimes forget that during the off-season riding a bike at faster speeds, along with a wind-chill factor, can be COLD!

And our fickle Vancouver sun can also disappear at any moment and give way to clouds.

Our bikes are FAST

Our Bees Knees eProdigy e-bikes are super fun, allowing you to ride hills effortlessly and pedal like a champ. Also, our powerful mid-drive motors will make sure you only work out as much as you want to. But all that wind you are feeling while you pedal effortlessly may require some extra clothing to keep warm. You will likely be riding average speeds that are faster than you would on a traditional bicycle, with less effort, so we want you to dress for the event.

What to wear

So what does all the mean? To take full advantage of our Bees Knees long lasting batteries, dress more like you are going to be riding a motor-scooter than a bicycle.

Here are some suggestions you should have with you when you arrive early for your rental e-bike:

  1. A back-pack to stow extra gear should you need it.
  2. Rain jacket – light and packable rain jacket.
  3. Gloves – warm packable gloves.
  4. Toque – good old Canadian stand-by.
  5. Helmet – although we supply free helmets, bringing your own will save time at check-out.
  6. Long pants – light pants that you can move freely in – you will still need to pedal! 🙂

Now that you have the basics covered

We think if you have the basic items listed above, you will have the confidence to ride longer even if the sun turns to clouds. Or, conversely, if the clouds turn to sun, have a way to pack away your outer layers and enjoy the early summer warmth!

Our online e-bike rental booking is open now and our e-bikes, for as low as $35 for 2 hours, go fast once the sun makes a run for it, so don’t delay!

Bees Knees

Don’t let the Vancouver weather hold you back from renting an e-bike!

If you want to take an afternoon or day off an explore Vancouver by bike, don’t wait too long for a sunny outlook from Environment Canada because, well…it is Vancouver! Can anyone really predict what is going to happen with our crazy weather with any predictability?

Here are Bees Knees e- Bike rentals, we can find a rental time that suits not only you or your group, but also the weather window you see outside your front door.

We offer 2-hour rentals at only $35, which can get you to a coffee shop, around Stanley Park, and home again before the first rain sprinkles start to happen.

With our rain friendly renters so far we have seen a great trend – a good old Vancouver rain jacket with warm layers, rain pants if you have them, and Blundstones or Gore Tex runners seem to be popular. If you bring your own helmet, there is your head cover! If you want to borrow one of our clean rental helmets – they are free of charge and even have an almost hip look to them.

So don’t let the weather get you down – find a destination, a food stop, and think how much you can do in only 2 hours from our location at Burrard and Drake. We are just a starting point away from a great adventure.

It’s a new year Vancouver, and more people are riding E-Bikes than ever!

With the new year, and leaving a crazy 2020 behind, one thing was clear here in Vancouver – the explosion of people deciding to get back into cycling, and cycle around the city. Even more so, and ask any bike shop this – more and more people are asking about and buying electric bikes – the E-Bike has finally arrived in our mainstream.

What is an E-Bike?

You have probably seen them around, but in some cases may not have noticed the difference between an E-Bike and a regular bike. Those who ride traditional bikes sure know – when riders blow by on Vancouver hills effortlessly. Generally speaking, e-bikes are bicycles with a battery-powered “assist” that comes via pedaling and, in some cases, a throttle. When you push the pedals on a pedal-assist e-bike, a small motor engages and gives you a boost, so you can zip up hills and cruise over tough terrain without gassing yourself.

Also, and I know from experience, they are FUN!

But they can be an expensive first purchase. Most shops would say, at a minimum, a good E-Bike starts at around $3000.

Not sure if the purchase is for you? Solution: rent one to find out!

Bee’s Knees bikes are super affordable to rent by the hour, or by the day. We can help get the right bikes for you and your group, and the right sizes – with lots of models to choose from. Our shop at Drake and Burrard is right on a bike path to great destinations like Granville Island, Stanley Park, or Jericho Beach.

We also feature the popular eProdigy bikes.

Give us a call or go online and book – sunny and longer days are just around the corner. 🙂

Debunking eBike Myths

Aside from the fact that eBikes are extremely popular in Europe and other parts of the world, there appears to be some mystery surrounding them in North America. While the trend to greener forms of transportation continues, eBikes are a large part of the equation. As they produce a far smaller carbon footprint than vehicles, touring around Vancouver and area on one is not only good for the environment, it is good for your health.

So why are there so many myths out there about the eco-friendly eBike? We are not sure but we do know that a myth is not truth and let’s take a look at some of the most common ones.

1 – An eBike Is Just A Fancy Moped

This is far from the truth. Side-by-side an eBike is completely different than a moped and even further along the scale from a bicycle of any kind. The construction alone includes components and mechanics that are not built into any other kind of two-wheeler. This makes operation of an eBike very different. Plus, there’s mileage, fuel, economy and maintenance benefits that can’t be matched.

2 – An eBike Is Extremely Heavy

Considering the fact that the operating mechanism in an eBike is much like that of an electric scooter, the overall body weight is light. It is also extremely light compared to the weight of a motorcycle, as an example. Because eBikes are easy to maneuver due to their lightweight construction, they are suitable for use by men, women, older men and women and younger children.

3 – An eBike Does Not Offer High Speed Travel

Sure, in the early days when eBikes were first hitting the market there were restrictions on the speed one could reach. As the marketplace has expanded and more manufacturers are producing this eco-friendly mode of transportation, speeds have also increased. You can credit newer designs and consumer demand for these changes.

4 – An eBike Is Costly

Again, with an increase in choices with more manufacturers entering the eBike market, competition has had an effect on pricing. That means better deals on wheels for you. In fact, not only is your initial investment affordable, your long-term costs will be minimal. An eBike is considered a low maintenance product and the cost of operating one is also minimal. Something this economical to own and operate cannot be costly.

5 – An eBike Is Noisy

Going back to the construction of an eBike, there is no typical engine parts as you would find in a normal motorized vehicle. In other words, there are no gear boxes, clutch plates or other complex parts. You could call a ride on an eBike whisper quiet which allows you to further enjoy your surroundings.
