With the new year, and leaving a crazy 2020 behind, one thing was clear here in Vancouver – the explosion of people deciding to get back into cycling and cycle around the city. Even more so, and ask any bike shop this – more and more people are asking about and buying electric bikes – the eBike has finally arrived in our mainstream.
What is an eBike?
You have probably seen them around, but in some cases may not have noticed the difference between an eBike and a regular bike. Those who ride traditional bikes sure know – when riders blow by on Vancouver hills effortlessly. Generally speaking, eBikes are bicycles with a battery-powered “assist” that comes via pedaling and, in some cases, a throttle. When you push the pedals on a pedal-assist eBike, a small motor engages and gives you a boost, so you can zip up hills and cruise over tough terrain without gassing yourself.
Also, and I know from experience, they are FUN!
But they can be an expensive first purchase. Most shops would say, at a minimum, a good eBike starts at around $3000.
Not sure if the purchase is for you? Solution: rent one to find out!
